MAITRE NAGEUR MANOU SELHORST

Manou Selhorst previously appeared in our production ‘Testament of a Journalist’. She is now presenting her own (graduation) production ‘Maître Nageur’ as part of the directing course at the Maastricht Theatre Academy.

For this performance, Manou Selhorst was inspired by the hotel in Marrakech where her grandmother has resided for forty years. Together with seven performers, she explores themes of longing and past glory in a mixture of dance and theatre.

In Maître Nageur, six hotel guests find themselves at the edge of the pool, under the lifeguards' watchful eye. They allow themselves to be pampered and entertained. Lingering touches, boisterous aquagym: anything to keep from getting bored.

The lifeguard observes with precision this dance against time. No one knows their sweaty bodies better, their strange habits and fragile attempts at connection. Desires are fulfilled even before they are expressed. Yet each hotel guest continues to search for a sense of happiness, which seems to slip through their fingers like water every time.
