How does a city deal with traditions? What does the KAA Ghent logo mean to the supporters? How much scope is there for discussing traditions, such as the KAA Ghent logo and associated slogans?

In December 2022, we made the news when, together with visual artist and Native American Tomahawk Greyeyes, we raised questions about the KAA Gent logo. Following the short performance, we joined Tomahawk in December 2023 on the documentary series Sarah in Wokeland to explain why his performance took place. Our aim with this action was to initiate a dialogue in Ghent about the use and history of the KAA Gent logo. We were not seeking to have the logo removed, but rather to bring a forgotten history into the open for discussion.

A year later, this theme is still very much alive in Ghent and beyond. It stirs up a lot of emotions and there are still many unanswered questions. How does a city deal with traditions? What does the KAA Gent logo mean to its supporters? How much space is there to discuss traditions, such as the KAA Gent logo and associated slogans? Why can we (not) compare the situation in Ghent with that in America, where various sports club logos have since been modified? We would like to bring together the different perspectives on these questions.
