Move over, Jeroen Meus. In Le Chicon, rising star Maxime Waladi takes the helm in the kitchen. Waladi seasons, bakes, prepares and serves his favourite vegetable – and the pride of Flanders – live on stage: chicory.
The young theatre maker, coached by Zouzou Ben Chikha, delves into the multicultural soil of his past, strewn with chicory heads and durum wheat. What does he cast aside and what does he wish to cherish? Waladi sets off in his white Air Maxes in search of his roots and takes on his demons.
Have a seat, make yourself comfortable, and take your shoes off if you like. Relax.
Chicory doesn’t need the sun!
A head of chicory grows
in a dark little corner.
All it needs is warmth
and fertile soil.
And if the soil isn’t fertile enough,
then you have to do your best to make it fertile.
